As many of you have seen in the news, some cellular users with Apple iPhone 6 and newer (6, 6 Plus, SE, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, and 7 Plus) may experience a noticeable slowing of their device due to the battery. When the older lithium batteries in these devices are cold or have a low charge, they may deliver power unevenly, causing the phone to shut down unexpectedly. The manufacturer determined slowing the device prevents this, and protects the electronics from possible damage.
To help resolve the slow downs, Apple has lowered the price of battery replacements on these older iPhone models from $79 to $29 through December 2018.
What should you do?
Visit the Apple Support website to learn more about obtaining a replacement battery. Users will need to schedule a “Genius Bar” appointment at a local Apple store (Eastview Mall in Victor, Walden Galleria in Buffalo), or schedule an appointment with an authorized Apple service provider (various Best Buy locations around Rochester, Mac-Ave in Victor).
University device users should work directly with their department to coordinate purchase and replacement as this requires the authorized dealer to install the new battery. The Apple Store and Best Buy locations will accept P-cards, or a personal credit card may be used if it is not a University cell phone.
