On August 23, 2012, staff at the Technology and Campus Services Expo welcomed 1,230 students to River Campus, the largest incoming class in University history. A second Expo held the following day welcomed the Class of 2016 to the Eastman School of Music.
Held annually on Move-In Day, the Expo is a one-stop shop to help new students acclimate to campus life. University staff, student groups, and Rochester-area businesses manned more than 50 booths this year, providing information about a range of services–such as technology, parking, health, dining, banking, and security–and ways to get involved on campus. IT staff helped students connect to campus wired and wireless networks, set up their campus email account and telephone service, pick up computers and other technology they ordered over the summer, and register for the University’s emergency notification system.
Shelly Rogers, an information security analyst in University IT, organized the considerable IT presence at the Expo this year. “What I personally enjoyed the most,” Rogers reflected, “was watching the emotions play across the faces of the students and their families as they entered and realized they were in good hands. We were very happy to be able to meet the new students, help them as needed, and make their families more comfortable about being able to connect with them.”
