James Purvis is Associate Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for the University and its entities, including the Medical Center, and its affiliates. As CISO, James is responsible for the organization’s overall security vision, this includes security operations – data and network security, incident response and vulnerability management, systems management, threat and vulnerability management – development and enforcement of security policies, business continuity and risk management.
With over a decade of service to the University, James has been a key contributor in shaping its security landscape, developing effective training programs, and most recently serving as the University’s Director of Education and Healthcare Risk and Compliance. From his past experiences, he brings a technical background blended with process discipline and expertise in security governance.
Prior to the University of Rochester, James worked in security administration, auditing and compliance roles for companies including PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Bausch and Lomb, and RIT. James holds a Bachelor of Science degree from RIT. James also holds information security management (CISM) and information system auditing (CISA) certifications from ISACA.
When not at work, James enjoys travelling and doing various sporting activities including golf, softball, triathlon, and cycling.
